Blueberries

Blueberries

Blueberries used to be one of those items we just skipped.  Blackberries and Raspberries were our preferred Berries.  We revisited the blueberry when we started questing to use different flavors.  We started eating them by the handful and then putting in salads and desserts. It did not take long for for the blueberry to be our go to fruit.  We even make jam with blueberries now.  Our jam is used in cocktails or as toppings.  We were missing out on such an extraordinary ingredient.

Blueberries are known for anti-oxidants and have a low glycemic load. The fruit is low calorie with moderate nutritional and dietary fiber values. fresh and frozen blueberries can have nearly the same qualities.

Fresh Blueberries are very low cost when in-season. I like to buy a few tubs from my local market, rinse and start munching. Fresh Blueberries are great for salads, pancakes, snacks and toppings.

Frozen blueberries are available all year and have additional conveniences. They are great for smoothies, compotes, jams and most of the same use as fresh blueberries.

Dried Blueberries are also amazing, they have a pronounced flavor. They are great for oatmeal, granola or a snack while hiking.

Tip: Your berries will last longer if you preform these steps:

  • Rinse
  • Strain
  • Spread out and let dry
  • Refrigerate in a ventilated or uncovered container
